Charles Darwin was a student at Christ’s from 1828 to 1831, and returned to Cambridge during 1836–1837 to collate the notes and collections he made while on HMS Beagle. To celebrate the bicentenary of Darwin’s birth, Christ’s College has created a series of exhibits and memorials:
• A new bronze sculpture of Charles Darwin as a 22-year-old student (by sculptor Anthony Smith), has been placed in a Darwin Garden in the College grounds
• The Darwin Sculpture Garden itself represents a ‘voyage of the Beagle’ in plants
• Darwin’s student room (G4) has been restored to its original appearance by John Van Wyhe and Jo Poole
• A Library exhibition on ‘Charles Darwin on land and at sea’ features his life and times, and letters to his lifelong friend (and second cousin) William Darwin Fox
• The Darwin Portico, which houses a bronze bust of Charles Darwin (presented for the 1909 celebrations), includes panels of information about Darwin’s life and times
• The Porters’ Lodge has a ‘Darwin Trail’ leaflet and Darwin in Cambridge by John van Wyhe
